    Trip Overview

Based in the city of Asahikawa, the trip provides access to a collection of remote backcountry zones spread across northern Hokkaido. Rather than focusing on a single destination, we move between different areas throughout the week, allowing us to take advantage of changing weather and snowfall patterns. The result is a highly flexible itinerary that consistently delivers quality skiing regardless of the conditions.

    Terrain and Elevation

The terrain throughout the White North trip ranges from the remote, smaller powder-filled mountains surrounding Asahikawa to the higher alpine terrain of Kurodake. North of Asahikawa, elevations typically range from 300m to 600 m and feature extensive birch forests, open glades, and expansive rolling terrain with minimal skier traffic. At Kurodake, elevations reach nearly 2,000m, providing access to larger alpine bowls and volcanic features. This combination of deep tree skiing and higher-elevation alpine terrain creates a diverse backcountry experience.

    Snow Quality and Conditions

Northern Hokkaido receives abundant, consistent snowfall throughout the winter season, with cold continental air masses producing exceptionally light and dry powder. The mountains surrounding Asahikawa are known for deep snow accumulation, low skier traffic, and well-protected forest terrain that skis well during storm cycles. Higher-elevation skiing on Kurodake often provides additional options when conditions allow, including alpine terrain and longer descents. By utilizing multiple mountain zones across the region, we are able to adapt daily objectives to snowfall, wind, visibility, and snow stability, helping us consistently find the best available conditions.

Flexibility is a central part of the White North trip. Daily objectives are adjusted based on weather, snowfall, and snowpack conditions, allowing us to select the most suitable terrain from a variety of mountain zones throughout northern Hokkaido. This may include focusing on sheltered forest skiing during storm cycles or taking advantage of stable weather to access higher-elevation terrain around Kurodake. By remaining flexible rather than following a fixed itinerary, we are able to consistently target the best available snow and skiing conditions throughout the trip.

    A Day Out

A typical day begins with breakfast before departing from Asahikawa for the day’s objective. Drive times generally range from 50 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, depending on weather, conditions, and the selected zone. Daily plans are adjusted to take advantage of the best available snow, allowing us to explore a variety of mountain areas across northern Hokkaido. Depending on terrain and group objectives, guests can expect multiple powder runs throughout the day, combining efficient ascents with quality descents. Evenings are spent back in Asahikawa, which offers some of Hokkaido’s best dining, with a wide selection of local izakayas, restaurants, and bars providing an authentic northern Japanese winter experience.
