The ideal period for the Central Hokkaido Powder Belt is from early January through late February, when snowfall is generally at its most consistent and temperatures remain cold. The trip also operates successfully into March, particularly for guests interested in alpine touring objectives and more stable weather patterns.
Central Hokkaido Powder Belt
The Central Hokkaido Powder Belt is a multi-day freeride and backcountry skiing experience based around the Furano region of Central Hokkaido.
Trip Overview
Over the course of the week you will travel around the Furano area skiing the best possible snow and weather conditions each day. The itinerary remains flexible, allowing guides to select from a variety of resort side-country zones and backcountry areas based on the snowfall and weather conditions. Skiing may include a combination of resort side-country terrain, backcountry skiing on the volcanoes of the Daisetsuzan National Park or accessing isolated backcountry zones by snowmobile. The Central Hokkaido Powder Belt week is designed for skiers and snowboarders looking for maximum flexibility, diverse terrain, and consistent access to some of the best powder skiing in Japan.
Terrain and Elevation
The terrain surrounding Furano offers a huge amount of variety within a relatively compact area. Lower elevation zones typically range from 300m to 1,200m and are dominated by nicely
spaced tree skiing, ideally suited to Hokkaido’s frequent storm cycles and deep snowfall. Higher terrain in the Daisetsuzan National Park range between 1,000m–2,400m, offering larger
alpine terrain, open volcanic features, and longer descents. This range of terrain allows us to adapt effectively to weather and visibility throughout the week. During storm cycles we
focus on sheltered tree skiing, and when it is clearer we ski larger alpine terrain and touring objectives.
Snow Quality and Conditions
Furano is widely regarded as one of the most reliable powder regions in Japan. Cold inland temperatures combined with frequent snowfall create exceptionally light and dry snow throughout
the winter season. Snow quality is generally very well preserved due to consistently cold temperatures and low humidity. Storm cycles regularly deliver significant snowfall, while the
variety of terrain and elevations allows us to continue finding excellent skiing conditions throughout the trip. With access to multiple zones surrounding Furano, it is extremely rare for
weather or snow conditions to prevent skiing.
Flexibility is a major focus of this trip. Daily plans are continuously adjusted according to snowfall, wind, visibility, temperatures, and avalanche conditions. Rather than remaining fixed to one ski area or objective, we move between different zones around Furano to maximize skiing quality. This flexibility is one of the key advantages of skiing in Central Hokkaido and an important part of the experience we offer.
Most days begin with an early morning pickup followed by a short transfer to the selected skiing location. Drive times are typically between 20 minutes to 1 hour and thirty minutes,
depending on the objective for the day.
Depending on conditions, the day may involve:
• Lift-accessed baccountry skiing
• Snowmobile-assisted backcountry access
• Backcountry touring
Touring days generally involve ascents of approximately 750–1,000 vertical meters depending on group ability and objectives. Around resorts, ascents may be around 500-750m.
Groups usually complete multiple runs throughout the day.
Backcountry days finish with a visit to a local onsen before returning to Furano.
Who is this trip for?
This trip is best suited to strong intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders comfortable skiing powder. Previous backcountry experience is beneficial, particularly for
touring-focused itineraries, although the trip can be adjusted depending on group objectives and ability levels. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, especially for days
involving touring or repeated sidecountry laps.
